New interview with Kevin Williamson
TVD executive producer Kevin Williamson clearly knows what the fans want. We chatted with Kevin at the Television Critics Association Tour and he let all the spoilery goodness fly! First thing’s first, Damon is getting a bedroom... and a bathroom. That’s right, the producer tells us that he’s been busy thinking up “all sorts of reasons for him to shower and just ponder his life. “ We like!
However, in more ominous TVD news, Kevin says that the show will be taking another tragic turn and “not everyone will be standing.” What the what? Read on for the scoop! (And remember to read Part Two of our interview here.)
Are there any characters that have been particularly surprising for you in how much you started to enjoy writing for them?
All of them have surprised me in various ways. But I knew that this year was going to be about Caroline and Tyler — that we were going to have the werewolf storyline. We set it up last year. We said we’re going to do it, so we had to deliver on it. I knew Caroline was going to be a game-changer for me. I wanted the audience to root for her and love her. I wanted her to be the little vampire who could. and I thought she delivered, in spades. And she keeps astounding me. She keeps surprising me. I was hoping she had it in her, and boy, did she ever.
What’s in the future for Caroline and Tyler’s relationship? Will werewolf/vampire tensions drive them apart?
Yes, 100 percent. In the very next episode, things begin to unfold that don’t bode well for their budding relationship. Tyler starts asking questions and we’ll see that blow open. And don’t forget, there’s Matt waiting over there in the middle. So there’s a little triangle going between a human, a vampire, and a werewolf. Tyler got through his transformation, she was there for him. They sort of have this kinship now, of this curse. And now we take it to the next level and play it out. It’s very tragic.
Is it a doomed relationship from the start?
Oh my god. I wish I could squeal and tell you everything that will happen. But over the next three episodes, Julie and I were watching and — it gets tragic.
Will it continue into Season 3?
Well we end a chapter in the next three episodes with regard to a lot of things we set in motion. And then we begin the next chapter, which is leading us to the finale.
Could you kill off any major characters and still have a show left? Maybe not Stefan or Damon, but you could lose Elena or Katherine…
I don’t know if anyone is ever going to buy that we’re going to kill Elena. She is the heart and soul of the show. And I don’t think I would spoil the show by killing Katherine. I think there’s too much juice there. I think that would be almost incredibly stupid on my part. We can do so much with these characters. Elena still has choices to make. There are things to do to these characters that you can still surprise the audience with.
Do you like what Caroline’s character has done to the tone of the show?
I love what Candice has done with the tone of the show. But it’s gonna get tragic. At the end of the season, not everyone will be standing.
You had to write out Caroline’s mother due to a leg injury. Did that interfere with the plot at all?
No, we figured it out. We just wrote her out of, I think, two episodes. We got around it. It was pretty easy.
Will Elena stay single for the rest of the season? What will happen to her romantically?
Is she single right now? Elena is always, no matter how single she is, she’s still standing there with Stefan. They’re a couple who have conflicts and they have a big one looming. They’re starting to truly disagree about how to handle things. But no, I wouldn’t stay she’s going to stay single by any means. I wouldn’t say she’s single now. She may be arguing or disagreeing with Stefan at the moment, but I don’t think they’re too far apart.
We’ve seen Katherine pass for Elena. Will we see Elena try to pass for Katherine?
There are some musical chairs that can go on in some fun ways, and also in some serious ways. We’re going to play some more of that. You’re probably going to see some more of that.
With whom is Damon naked in the bathtub in the previews we’ve seen?
I’m not going to tell you who’s joining him. That scene has not aired yet. It is Episode 13, I think. The thing is, we’ve built his bedroom now and we have his bathroom. It sort of makes its debut in Episode 12 — the next episode. So now we have a gorgeous rain shower and an amazing bathtub. And so, we’ll just think of all sorts of reasons for him to shower and just ponder his life.
In most vampire lore, you don’t see them bathe.
We just thought, he could have his existential crises in a shower and ponder all of eternity while having water cascading down his body. [Editor’s note: Hawt!]
Has any plot development surprised you with the way it worked out on screen?
Katherine. I never expected to see as much of Katherine as we did, because I thought it would be so difficult to film, with the same actress. And scheduling it takes time and money. But she was so delicious and such a great engine for storytelling that I couldn’t stay away. Her performance is what made me say, we’re going there.
Can you say anything more about when we’re going to see Klaus? What episode? Is he cast?
We’re not exactly sure what episode he’ll show up in. But I would venture to say — we have not cast him yet — and we’re heavily casting right now.
Are there candidates or a type you can reveal? A height? A race? An age?
I’ve got to be honest — there are about 100 auditions I need to go home and read through. There aren’t any types — I want that really great actor to surface, and then go, “Wow, I can write for him. He’ll work really well.”
Are you casting a name we already know or someone new?
We’re looking at both — people who might be familiar to an audience. But most importantly, we want the right actor. So I’m guessing it’ll probably be someone we don’t know.
Age-wise, would he be an age-appropriate mate for the characters you have?
Yes. Keep in mind, Klaus is someone who in his history seduced Katherine in Bulgaria. So he would have been someone suitable for her. Not an old man. And by old on the CW, I mean 31. Hey, I’m 45.
Since you’re talking about casting, how do you feel about the article in Newsweek that said Hollywood is not casting gay actors in gay roles?
I just look at the actors when they come in to audition. Whether they’re gay or not, I don’t ask them. That’s not how it works.
The article’s point is that out actors who everyone knows are out are not getting cast in leading roles. Would it have concerned you to cast an out gay man as Damon or Stefan for fear the audience wouldn’t accept them?
I’m at a place in my life where I’m over that. Bring me the right actor. That’s for someone else to worry about. That’s not my issue. My issue is telling the story, making the best show possible, and finding the best actor who will marry himself to my writing. And I could give a rat’s ass if he’s gay, straight or whatever.
Would network executives interfere?
I don’t know. I’ve never come across this situation. I’d love it and I’m all for it. I’m gay as a goose, so bring it on. Bring me a gay actor who’s perfect for the part, and he’ll get it.
Are there any gay vampires to show up on the show?
All vampires are gay in my mind. We’ve got to get some in Mystic Falls. But I have to kill some people off first. We’ve got to make room for them. I keep envisioning a world in which I can get Caroline’s dad in there. Because he’s a founding family member, and we’ve already established him as being gay. I think it would be great to have a fierce gay man come in there and run that council. I don’t think we’ll get around to it this season. You want to do it right — you can’t just bring him in to bring him in.
Are we looking at a Moldavian bloodbath at the end of this season then?
No, not that bad. The gay thing about leading men and women, that’s a tough and very important issue. I remember the union had a whole panel about that at one point. I’ve got friends who are out there, plugging away.
Jane Lynch was very honest and provocative the other night, because she said she doesn’t think that middle America is ready to accept a gay actor in the leading role. She feels like [viewers] need to be able to project their romantic aspirations 100% on that person. So if they know that actor’s gay, they’re going to have a hard time. She also went on to say that she thought network suits would have that fear.
If you really cast the right actor for the right role, it’s not a problem.
Maybe we don’t have enough out actors yet who fit the leading man persona.
There is a small pool of our actors, I can only think of 3 or 4. And then if you say which one of them is a leading man, then it narrows. Because there is a difference between a character actor and a leading man. The good thing is, I also work for the CW, and they’re all about diversity. They want us to cast them, cast them, cast them. That’s a badge of honor for them. Every time I cast a role, it’s always about where’s the diversity.
Is it more acceptable for vampires to be gay? So you have carte blanche on your show?
I think vampires are gay anyway. Like I think the whole werewolf story is one big coming-out metaphor. So making him gay is almost too on the nose.

Candice Accola BuzzSugar Interview
Buzz: Were you shocked when you first found out that Caroline was going to be a vampire?
Candice Accola: It had been hinted. I guess I was shocked at the extreme at which she kicked ass so much within that episode too; it wasn't a slow build. And the fact that they gave her the opportunity to catch on and to be very dominant in the sense that she killed people. When the people you work with on a day-to-day basis look at the blood on your face and have to turn away . . . it was pretty graphic. I'm glad that they allowed the character who's so perky and vain to just get dirty.
Buzz: When did you find out?
CA: I was very happy to get a phone call from Kevin [Williamson] before we went back for season two, so I did know that it was going to happen, but things do get brought up and changed. It wasn't until I saw it on the paper that it was like, this is real, this is happening.
Buzz: You and Michael Trevino (Tyler) recently had a very moving scene when Tyler transitioned to a werewolf for the first time.
CA: It was moving just to be in the room. It was a smaller set and a smaller crew and it was shot over two 12- to 14-hour days, and it was really hard to watch. Trevino [Michael, who plays Tyler] obviously wasn't wearing very many clothes, the chains he had on in the episode, they were real chains. He was bawling his eyes out. It was really tough to watch. You know, Trevino is a dude, he is a full-on, very masculine man and so to watch him get so vulnerable, it definitely created a very open space in which [I was] able to feel what was going on.
Buzz: Where is the relationship between Caroline and Matt going?
CA: There's obviously a love triangle; and what's missing in one, the other one has. I think Matt is Caroline's first true love, but I think that Tyler, she can really be her real new self in front of. It's really up to the writers to decide where they want to take it. But I love that their [Tyler and Caroline] relationship didn't start out as a sexual one, there was no sexual tension, it was purely friendship, purely "if you've got my back, I've got your back." And Caroline hadn't had that yet in the season.
Buzz: Caroline and Stefan have struck up a friendship; do you think anything romantic will ever happen between them?
CA: It's always fun when you have new faces in front of you, and Caroline and Stefan didn't really have a lot of scenework in the first season, so I think that's what everyone is talking about in regards to the second season. They've got a great banter, you know. [But] He's got enough to worry about with Elena. And that's the other thing, it's another friendship; yes, she was attracted to him back then, but at this point it really is just stemming from the friendship, and I just need help. It's refreshing because it's that old question, can men and women just friends?

E! Online Interview Nina Dobrev
What could be better than Joshua Jackson's or James Van Der Beek's Funny or Die videos? How about the new(er) kids on the Kevin Williamson block: Nina Dobrev and the cast of the CW's Vampire Diaries?
I just spoke to Nina herself moments ago and she revealed that she and her TVD cast mates just shot some Funny or Die footage, and she also weighed in on casting the show's highly anticipated new "original" baddie Klaus...
"We're actually working on a [Funny or Die video] right now," Nina tells me. "When we were snowed in, in Georgia, we were twiddling our thumbs. We didn't know what to do. So we got a camera and we shot a couple things. A bunch of us. Myself and other cast members. If it's funny, you just might see it!"
Who votes for we get to see it either way?!
Nina was thrilled to be in sunny Cali today to attend the Television Critics Association winter press tour, having left the bad weather behind. "I was snowed in for four days and couldn't leave the house. The Canadian in me thought it was ridiculous, in three inches of snow, that we were snowed in. But it was like the apocalypse. You go to the grocery store and there's no food or eggs!"
When Vampire Diaries returns Jan. 27, Nina promises: "A lot of Damon and Stefan saving the day. A lot of new characters coming in—one who has been anticipated for a long time is coming."
Fans know she's talking 'bout Klaus, the "original" superbad vampire who is guaranteed to wreak havoc on all the Mystic Falls characters we know and love. "Who that is we don't know yet. I k now they've been going through rigorous casting," Nina says. And she has her own (stellar!) idea:
"I think it'd be awesome if it was Sasha Baron Cohen using his Austrian accent," Nina says with a laugh, switching into SBC's hilarious dialect: "Like, ‘Hello my name is Klaus. How are you? I want to suck your blood.' I think it'd be great if he is the opposite of what everyone is expecting."
Um yeah, if the stuff they already shot doesn't work out for a Funny or Die video, how about that idea right there?
Per Nina, one thing is sure about Klaus' casting: "Given that it's the CW I'm sure he'll be mildly attractive."
Nina also gave some tidbits for your Delena and Stelena fans, and more on what to expect up ahead on the show. We'll post that video before TVD returns. You know, just in case you fans weren't already excited.

EW Interviews Sara Canning
Season 2 of The Vampire Diaries has brought more action for Michael Trevino (Tyler) and Candice Accola (Caroline). Could it be Sara Canning’s turn next? The actress who plays Jenna, Elena and Jeremy’s aunt, says a significant storyline is on the horizon for the character. Will it involve her finally finding out that vampires, werewolves, and witches have been in her house? Okay, that she still can’t say. “Truthfully, I have no idea,” she admits. “I’ve gotten that feeling before and it hasn’t come to fruition. They say, ‘It could happen in two episodes, or it could happen in two seasons.” (That, we can confirm: Exec producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec will tell you they change their minds about when Jenna and Zach Roerig’s Matt will finally join The Knowing on a week-to-week basis. Do Canning and Roerig have a bet on who finds out first? No, she says. “But we were thinking of making T-shirts that said Team Oblivious Human. I think Zach and I have the same attitude in that we think it’s pretty cool that we’re two of the only characters left that don’t know. There’s still a huge question mark on how our characters will find out and how their lives will be changed, and we still get to have the fun of playing that when a lot of the cast has already gone through that.”)
So what can Canning tell us about how Jenna gets more screen time in the second half of season 2? Well, look for things to get interesting when Uncle John (David Anders) returns to Mystic Falls. (That’s by February, Plec says.) “We’ve seen to what degree already John affects Jenna. We know they’ve had a past relationship. We know that he’s making trouble for her in terms of guardianship of Elena and Jeremy. He just kind of irks her in every possible way. But I think the more significant thing that we’re gonna see is the tension that it puts on the relationship between Jenna and Alaric (Matt Davis),” Canning says. “In the first season, that was a lot of Oh, he’s got a dead wife, or so Jenna thinks, and he was dealing with Isobel returning as a vampire. It’s just been a shenanigan of a relationship from the get-go. But now they’ve kinda got a nice thing going, and I think they’re really crazy about each other. But the major thing is the secrets that Alaric is a part of that Jenna is oblivious to. I don’t think John is going to make their relationship an easy thing. He’s got his own motives. He may need to use Alaric in some of those motives. So we will see. The great thing is that we’ll see Jenna become more involved because he’s back, and because of what’s going on between him, and Alaric, and Damon, and Stefan, and Elena, and everyone else in the world who knows there are vampires.” Producers won’t confirm when or exactly how Uncle John returns — does someone reach out to him or does he come to them? — but if has knowledge about the Originals, Elena and Co. will have to listen. (Pause as we stop to think of Uncle John and Damon, who’ve tried to kill each other, reuniting: “They have to figure out how to work together, unfortunately for both of them, and there’s a lot of double-crossing that could go on,” Ian Somerhalder tells us. “You never know what’s around the corner. Uncle John is not wearing that ring, and Damon would love to do nothing more than just literally rip the guy’s head off. But he can’t, because that would pose even more problems.”)
Speaking of the Originals, we know Elijah (Daniel Gillies), who’s posing as an author researching small towns, has already met Jenna, who got roped into playing Historical Society hostess in the last episode. Will they be seeing more of each other? “Yes,” Canning says. “When Elijah first comes to town, they have a pretty introductory kind of ‘hello, what are you up to here, this is what I do’ relationship. But we’ll see that grow into something else. And that is all I’m saying.” Could it turn, gulp, romantic? ”She’s been with like every other guy who comes back to town,” she says, laughing. “My dad, every time he watches the show, he’ll call me right after and say, ‘Really? Another guy?’ Which is pretty funny. He’s like, ‘What is going on with your character? She has been around the block.’ Elijah is very charming. That would put her in a weird position, because we all know what his deal is, and I’m sure he’s not gonna tell her. That’d be fun.”
Our fingers are crossed for Elijah using Jenna, and for Jenna having more sex scenes with Alaric. (Sorry, dad.) Canning’s not sure when Alaric and Jenna will be shown post-coital again. “Any more awkward, ice cream bowl, pantsless scenes? I don’t know yet. I can just say that scene was superfun to shoot. I think Matt Davis and I have the most fun when we have to address a really awkward scene,” she says. “I think if we had our way, they would awkward their way through everything in life. If they do have more sex scenes, I hope it’s just like ridiculous. We see a lot of passion on the show, but it’s nice to see the real human side of how things can get between two people as well. Maybe they can hold down the fort in that spectrum.” Fun fact: Canning was originally supposed to be wearing a bra and panties in that scene. “I actually walked into the fitting before I read the script, and there were bras hanging everywhere, and I was like, ‘Okay. What’s all this about? Why is there a bunch of underwear for me to try on?’ It’s funny that that’s sometimes how we find out about scenes like that. But then we ended up trying on the man shirt, and we thought this seems more like Jenna. We thought that was almost more intimate.” Plus, it was a legitimate excuse to have Matt Davis shirtless.
So in conclusion, being a clueless human on the show does have it perks. It’s something Canning has been thinking a lot about recently: “Even though Jenna isn’t involved in a lot of the mystery that goes on in the town supernaturally, I really think she’s one of the most mysterious characters on the show right now, because we haven’t seen a lot of her life. We’ve only seen her dealing with Elena, Jeremy, John, and Alaric. We never really see Jenna on her own. We know that she’s getting her master’s. We don’t see her doing those things. She’s out of the house very often, so I’m often wondering where is she? What is she up to right now? What I’m really excited about for the rest of the season is the fact that I think I will be surprised by Jenna.”

EOnline Spoilers About Bonnie, Jeremy, Matt and Caroline
Gregory: Is it true what your frenemy said about Bonnie and Jeremy kissing on The Vampire Diaries? What more will happen from there?
I'm told that for now, there's not much more planned beyond the kiss. But yes, the kiss will indeed happen. Who's happy? And if not, what is wrong with you?! I kid. Not really.
@CAccolaWeb (via Twitter): Previously you said that Matt and Caroline fans shouldn't give up hope...Is that still the case now?
I see no reason to give up hope now! As far as I know, Matt and Caroline will be in a love triangle with you-know-who (Tyler), but so far no indication on which guy will come out the big winner. What I can tell you is that there will be some smoochery. And sooner rather than later.

Candice Accola Says Caroline Always Had Heart
Midway through Season 2, the CW series The Vampire Diaries has already featured death, destruction and multiple transformations. For viewers, the most fun to watch, no question, has been the metamorphosis of Caroline Forbes.
Throughout Season 1, Caroline, played by Candice Accola, was the quintessential popular girl in school, full of insecurities despite her cheerful outer shell. And although it appears that becoming a vampire has actually softened her, Accola tells TVGuide.com, the compassion was always there.
"Caroline always had a heart; it just didn't have the perspective. That's the one thing I think Caroline gained from transforming, a newfound, grown-up perspective on life," Accola says.
While the 23-year-old actress says she loves playing the sassy version of her character, she's challenged when she has to be emotional.
"It's a very vulnerable thing ... to just break down and go there," she says.
Watch the video from our set visit for more of what Accola loves most about playing Caroline and what she wants to see for her character throughout the series. Hint: She'd like to keep breathing.

Latest Spoilers From Kristin
@TooCool_2012 (via Twitter): Is Bonnie gonna hook-up with Jeremy or the new guy Luka? #TheVampireDiaries
Yes! That's a pretty safe answer to your question because Katerina Graham herself just told us this about what lies ahead: "Bonnie does get a kiss." So which guy will seal the deal? She's not saying, but she did spill some other deets on Jeremy and Luka and the possibility of Damon and Bonnie (and the Delena fans go crzazay!), so stand by for more from Katerina soon. (For the record though, my money is on Bonnie and Jeremy. Care to wager?)
@caitlinems (via Twitter): Duhhhhh, anything on Vampire Diaries! Maybe a little more of Matt in future episodes?
I'm told more Matt is definitely on the way. You are welcome.
