Biggest Time Leap Will Reveal Katherine’s Origin

The CW’s ‘The Vampire Diaries‘ will take viewers on their biggest trip through time to shed light on Elena’s dark doppelganger.
“The episode that we start shooting on Tuesday is set around 1490″ – and in Bulgaria – executive producer Julie Plec shared backstage at New York Comic-Con on Sunday. “We’ve talked about wanting to show Katherine’s origin story, and it is cool.”

Adds exec producer Kevin Williamson, “We go back in time to show a lot about how Katherine (played by Nina Dobrev) came to become who she was. We answer a lot of questions” – including a few burning ones concerning her ties to the Petrova clan, her beginnings as a bloodsucker, and why she’s an undead ringer for Elena.

After this trip to circa-1490 Bulgaria (tentatively set to air Nov. 11), Plec hopes to later this season present another flashback “to understand how [Katherine] ended up in Mystic Falls.” As the showrunner notes, “There’s a lot to story to tell with her as long as she’s still kicking!”
But is ‘Vampire Diaries’ unspooling too much juicy story too quickly in its rousing, jam-packed sophomore season? Williamson shrugs off any concern that his team will run out of steam. In fact, he says they’re already mapping out the beginnings of Season 3.
For now, though, “We’re trying to figure out the breaking point – where we are going to stop at the end of this season,” he says. “We kind of know what we want for our season finale, we know what the cliffhanger is already, so [it's all a matter of] ‘What do I get in there before?’”
